Geist Clubhouse Issue Headed for a Vote
Volunteers from the Geist Recreational Facility Committee (”Geist Rec”) working to save the Geist Clubhouse presented their argument last night for purchasing the 10+ acre amenity and bringing it under the GHPOA umbrella. Jim Felli led the presentation and was accompanied by approximately 8 other core committee members. Felli argued that the declining enrollment at the Clubhouse over the last 4 years was due to the increase in price and reduction of services. When the GHPOA board originally looked at the purchase in 2007, the primary objections cited by the Clubhouse due diligence subcommittee...
Shop and Give Simultaneously this Holiday Season
It’s been widely predicted that holiday spending will be down this year, and plunging along with it, is charitable giving. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could donate to a good cause and take care of your Christmas shopping all at the same time? Well, you can! Here, we outline three ways to benefit local non-profit organizations without spending anything extra this holiday season. Sound too good to be true? Keep reading! GoodShop.com Several local schools and charitable organizations are among the more than 68,000 non-profits nationwide that are benefitting from the online shopping mall GoodShop.com,...
Teacher of the Month: Dave Shafer Inspires Passion for Science
Take a look around Dave Shafer’s fifth grade classroom and you’ll see a room alive with science. Walls, shelves — even the ceiling and the hallway outside — are crowded with natural specimens, lab equipment and other evidence of serious scientific research. Most importantly, you’ll find students energized and engaged in their work. “Everything we do is related to science,” says Shafer, who teaches in Forest Glen Elementary’s Immersion Program, sharing 48 kids with Liliana Nunez, who teaches the Spanish portion. Shafer is responsible for math, English and science, and incorporates...
Want a Wider 79th Street? Speak Up!
How many of us feel trapped unnecessarily in traffic on 79th street between Sunnyside and Fall Creek roads? We all know the road should be widened to allow ample room for traffic flow, proper water drainage and adequate shoulders. We need to act NOW if we care about our safety and the value of our homes in the neighborhoods surrounding this dangerous thoroughfare in Geist. As some of you already know, back in April 2003, a meeting was held to introduce a project to widen 79th from Fall Creek to Sunnyside. The work was scheduled to be done in 2007 until former Mayor Bart Peterson canceled the project...
Feather Cove I Gives: Join Your Neighbors in Giving to Charitable Drives
As the weather cools and the year nears its end, as we hear the Salvation Army bells ringing on our way to and fro, we may pause to ponder what true “Christmas spirit” is. And somewhere deep within emerges a desire to give. Whether it be time, money or surplus household items, we all have something to give. This holiday, some of our Geist neighbors are asking you to join them in giving to the homeless and the destitute — to give the gift of hope and kindness. We give the philanthropy award to Feather Cove 1, with two charitable efforts currently underway in this Geist neighborhood. For...
Geist Church Needs Help after Fire at Sister Church
The Geist area Church, Abounding Grace ( 62nd and Sunnyside Road) is asking for a little help this holiday season, after a fire destroyed its sister Church on the Eastside. Bell’s Chapel Church of God burned down November 9th at 42nd and Mitthoeffer Road. Fire officials say an electrical outlet in the building is to blame. Bishop Adrienne Holmes, a Geist resident, says they plan to rebuild, but in the meantime, a community is without its church and daycare, which served more than 100 children. “I stand on that corner and pray for that community every morning,” says Holmes. “The church itself...
Holiday Recipe: Turkey a`la King
Do you look for creative ways to cook your leftover holiday turkey? This recipe is my rendition after merging many recipes together over the years and is my family’s favorite for making our surplus of turkey taste so delightfully exquisite. This simple yet royal dish would surely please any king. This meal is served over rice, but it is also exceptional when served over toast! Ingredients: ¼ cup margarine or butter 2 cups of fresh mushrooms 1 medium/large onion diced 2 stalks of celery diced 1 small red pepper diced 1½ cup of frozen green peas (cooked) 1/3 cup of all-purpose flour 1¾ cups...
Update Your atGeist.com Bookmarks, Links
Over the last few days, we have been moving the atGeist.com weblog and associated neighborhood blogs to a new server. In the process, several links, bookmarks, and downloads have been updated or changed. Previously, several sites were under the GeistBlogs.com domain (i.e. GeistBlogs.com/fishers). Now, all those domains that were forwarding are resolving at their own domain name.
